Commissioned 4/27/25

Desired Takeaway
Participants will leave with a renewed sense of purpose in the call to make disciples, recognizing that Jesus’ commission isn’t reserved for experts—it’s for anyone walking with Him. They will feel encouraged and equipped to invite others into the way of Jesus, empowered by His presence.

Icebreaker
Share how you came to follow Jesus. Did someone play an important role in that process?

1. Lean In (get everyone talking)
Question: When you hear the phrase “Go and make disciples,” how does it make you feel—excited, intimidated, confused? Why?

2. Look Down (examine the text)
Read 2 Timothy 2:1–2 aloud together.
“You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well.” — 2 Timothy 2:1–2 (NRSV)
Question: What do you notice about Paul’s model of discipleship here? What kind of people is Timothy called to entrust the gospel to, and why?
Bonus discussion angle: This shows four generations of discipleship—Paul → Timothy → faithful people → others. How does that help you imagine your own role in the chain?

3. Look Out (connect the text to the world)
What do you think keeps people from engaging in discipleship today? Is it time, fear, feeling unqualified, or something else?
Where do you already see opportunities for spiritual conversations or relationships in your life—places where you live, work, or hang out?

4. Look In (personal reflection)
Question: What would it look like for you to begin discipling someone—not as a teacher with all the answers, but as a companion helping someone else walk with Jesus?
Follow-up: What insecurities or fears do you have about that idea? What encouragement do you find in knowing Jesus promised to be with us?

5. Live It Out (take a step of faith)
Question: If disciple-making is more about presence than performance, what is one simple way you could be more intentional with someone in your life this week?
Examples:
Invite someone to read Scripture with you.
Ask a spiritual question over coffee.
Share what you're learning in your walk with Jesus.
Offer to pray for someone out loud.

Optional Exercises for the Week
  • Pray for One. Each morning, pray: “Lord, show me one person today I can love like you.” Pay attention to who comes to mind and take one step toward them.
  • Story Share. Practice telling someone your faith story in 3 minutes—what your life was like before Jesus, how you met Him, and how you’re walking with Him now.
  • Discipleship Mapping. Sketch out the spiritual relationships in your life—who has poured into you, who you’ve walked with, and who you could begin walking alongside.

Prayer Prompt
“Jesus, thank you for trusting ordinary people like us with your extraordinary mission. Help us to see the people around us the way you do. Give us courage to step out, wisdom to walk with others, and faith to know you are always with us. Make us disciple-makers who carry your presence into our world. Amen.”
