Discussion Guide — Throwing Stones John 8:1–11

Desired Takeaway

Jesus confronts sin without dehumanizing sinners. His grace refuses both condemnation and indifference. As His followers, we are invited to put down our stones—choosing restoration over humiliation while still honoring truth.

Icebreaker
  • Mercy or Justice?
When you watch movies or shows, do you usually root for justice or mercy when a character does something wrong? Why?

Discussion Questions
1. Lean In
  • When people make serious mistakes, what do you think most people expect from others—punishment, forgiveness, or something else?

2. Look Down
Read John 8:1–11 together.
  • What stands out to you about how Jesus responds to both the accusers and the woman?

Compare with Matthew 7:1–5
Jesus teaches about removing the log in your own eye before addressing the speck in someone else’s eye.
  • What similarities do you notice between this teaching and what Jesus does in John 8?
  • Why do you think Jesus places such emphasis on self-examination first?

3. Look Out
In the story, the crowd reduces the woman to a category—“sinner”—while Jesus treats her as a person.
  • Where do you see this kind of “categorizing” happening in our culture today? What effects does it have on people and communities?

4. Look In
Jesus says, “Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone.”
  • When you reflect on your own life, what helps you stay humble instead of judgmental toward others?

5. Live It Out
  • Imagine what your relationships, church, workplace, or community would look like if people consistently told the truth about sin while also refusing to humiliate or discard people.
  • What kind of culture would that create?

Optional Exercises for the Week
1. The “Put Down the Stone” Practice
When you feel the urge to judge or criticize someone this week, pause and pray:
“Jesus, help me see this person the way You do.”
2. Restore, Don’t Condemn
If there is someone in your life who has made a mistake, consider how you could approach them with both honesty and compassion.
3. Slow Down Like Jesus
Notice moments of tension this week. Instead of reacting quickly, intentionally pause before responding—creating space for wisdom and grace.

Prayer Prompt
Pray that God would shape your heart to reflect the posture of Jesus—people who care deeply about truth but refuse to dehumanize others. Ask for humility about your own need for mercy and courage to extend grace to others.
