Discussion Guide: It Isn’t Fair! Matthew 25:14-27

Desired Takeaway:
God does not operate on human fairness but on divine justice, entrusting us with resources according to our abilities. Our role is to faithfully steward what we have been given without comparison or fear.

Icebreaker Question:
Have you ever felt like you were given an “unfair” share of something—whether in school, sports, work, or family? How did that experience shape your perspective on fairness?

Discussion Questions:
1. Lean InGet Everyone Talking
The parable describes three servants entrusted with different amounts. Imagine you’re one of them—what would your initial reaction be to receiving your portion? Would you feel honored, pressured, or disappointed? Why?

2. Look Down – Observe the Text

Read John 21:20-22. Peter asks Jesus about John’s future, and Jesus responds, “…what difference does that make to you? You must follow me.”
How does Jesus’ response challenge our tendency to compare our journey with others?

3. Look Out – Connect to the World

In what ways do you see the world operating on a “fairness” mindset rather than a “justice” mindset? Can you think of real-world examples where equal treatment would actually be unjust?

4. Look In – Personal Reflection

Have you ever struggled with comparing your gifts, opportunities, or abilities to others? How has that affected your motivation to serve or step out in faith?

5. Live It Out – Apply the Truth

If faithfulness, not comparison, is what God values, what is one step you can take this week to invest your “talent” rather than bury it?

Optional Exercises for the Week:
  • Gratitude Inventory – Spend time writing down the skills, opportunities, and resources God has entrusted to you. Ask yourself: Am I using these well? If not, what’s one practical way I can start?
  • Encourage a “One Talent” Person – Identify someone who feels overlooked or undervalued in their gifts. Write them a note or tell them in person what you see in them and how they make an impact.
  • Risk Something – Choose one area where you’ve been hesitant to step out in faith. This week, take one small step—whether it’s volunteering, having a spiritual conversation, or offering help where it’s needed.
